If you’ve been paying attention to science news for the past few weeks, chances are you’ve heard about the comet that is currently viewable from Earth. Comet NEOWISE, or C/2020 F3, was discovered in March and is currently at it’s closest approach to Earth TODAY.
You’ve still got a great chance to go out and see the comet tonight and early tomorrow morning for a view of NEOWISE at it’s closet approach to Earth. It may be 103.5 million km (64.3 million miles) from Earth, but that is close enough to see with an unaided eye (without a telescope).
Best way to watch? Head for a clear area, like a field, with minimal surrounding light and far from any big cities. While you can see the comet just by looking up, consider bringing along binoculars or a telescope for a better view.
The comet is best seen an hour or two after sunset. Look for the Big Dipper, and just below that you should see the comet.
